4 Days South Luangwa NP Chalet Experience

Enjoy Untouched Wilderness

Stay in a chalet of Track & Trails River Camp, located in beautiful surroundings close to the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking a busy wildlife crossing Point.

Itinerary

We now offer flights from Lusaka to and from South Luangwa NP and arrange bus transfers from Lusaka to Chipata connecting onto our South Luangwa packages.

Day 1 – Luangwa Valley

Morning departure from Lilongwe or chipata towards the Luangwa Valley in Zambia. Lunch on route. Arrive at the lodge and spend time acclimatising to the African Bush. Enjoy dinner at the Kiboko tented camp restaurant, overlooking the Luangwa River, watching elephants cross at dusk and listening to the sounds of the great outdoors. Relax over a drink before retiring for the evening.

Day 2

Start the day with a pre game drive breakfast at the Kiboko tented camp restaurant followed by an early morning game drive, with one of our experienced guides. Enjoy the sights of the national park before returning to camp for a well needed brunch. After lunch there is the possibility to swim in the lodge’s pool before entering the national park to go on a late afternoon/night game drive. This is a unique way to view the nocturnal activity of the park. Dinner will be served at the Kiboko tented camp restaurant.

Day 3

After an early morning breakfast it is time to expand your list of spotted game, by going on a morning game drive. Return to the camp for lunch. After lunch it is time to relax (take a swim) at the lodge’s pool, before going on the second late afternoon/night game drive. Coming back to the lodge, and enjoy your dinner (prepared and served at the Kiboko tented camp restaurant).

Day 4

After breakfast depart for Lilongwe. Stop on route at the Tribal Textile Workshop to see the beautiful fabrics made by the local craftsmen and artists. Arrive back in Lilongwe or chipata in the afternoon.

Wild life & Game viewing information

Welcome to Kiboko Camp, Mfuwe Zambia.

Our eco friendly tented safari camp in Zambia is location alongside the river bank of the Luangwa River. All tents now have excellent views over the river and its inhabitants, hippo’s, crocodiles and various beautiful birds.

There are hot showers, flushing toilets and a restaurant area on the premises. A well stocked bar and a swimming pool are available at the “Track and Trail” premises.

As the campsite is located just outside the National Park, and within the “Game Management Area” it is common that various wild animals roam the grounds on this side of the river, animals like elephants and hippo’s come ashore during evening and early morning hours.

There are some guidelines we want you to know:

Always, at all times keep a minimum distance between you and the animal of 40 metres. (If you find yourself closer, retreat slowly and keep the animal within eyesight, so that you can see the animals movements.)

Elephants:

If the elephant looks like it is not happy (lifting trunk and sniffing air, holding its ears out to make it look even bigger) you are to close, the elephant may charge. Retreat into safety of a building or vehicle, walk quickly, but do not run.
Elephants have bad eyesight and therefore feel vulnerable when they unexpected encounter people. Elephants are always looking for food and especially fruits. Do not keep any food in the tents as Elephants will force them open.

Hippos:

Hippo’s come on to the river bank at night to graze; Never walk in between the hippo and the water because the Hippo then feels threatened. Hippo’s are faster than they look and are able to speed around 40 Km/hour.

Monkeys:

Do not leave food unattended, as baboons and other monkeys are very quick to grab your cookies etc., and will adapt unnatural habits by doing so.

Overall advice:

Use a torch between 6 pm and 6 am when moving around camp; night watch men are available to escort you to and from your tent. Ask your guide for more information or advise if required, it will be a pleasure for him to share his knowledge with you.

Game viewing

The South Luangwa National Park has a long history of photographic safaris and the people involved have tried to maintain the highest standards of guiding and game viewing.

To do this we have to have guidelines that we ask all guides in the South Luangwa National Park to follow whenever possible. These guidelines are for the protection of the environment and to ensure all guests’ experiences of the South Luangwa National Park are as they should be.

To ensure the animals are not distressed by too many vehicles at one time we ask guides to avoid having more than three vehicles on a sighting at any one time. Therefore if your vehicle is the first on a sighting please do not expect the guide to stay for too long if there are other vehicles waiting. If you are the fourth vehicle there, the guide will wait for a short time away from the sighting until the first vehicle pulls off. We realise that sometimes this means that not everyone gets to see the best sightings but there is always next time!!!

To protect the flora and fauna of the area, we ask guides not to drive “off road”. There is a lot of life you are not necessarily aware of inhabiting the scrub just off the roads (birds’ nests, lichens rich in minerals, rare plants etc). Therefore if you ask your driver to “drive a bit further off the road so I can get a better photograph” he should tell you that he can’t and explain to you why. Therefore please do not ask!!!

We all have a responsibility to protect the area’s natural resources for the future and at the same time give you the best game viewing experience in Africa. Please help us to do both by being understanding when a guide may have to say “no”.

Vaccinations & Health Advise:

Vaccination requirements and other health requirements can change so please check with a specialized doctor or health centre for up to date information before you depart. Dietary requirements:

Although we make every effort to cater for any dietary requirements, not all products are always available. Therefore should any special dietary requirement be explained to us in writing at the time of the booking. Gluten free four and decaffeinated coffee should be brought with you if required.

Visa exemption update:

Please be advised that the (free of charge) visa exemption arrangement, as previous used by Zambian tour operators has been changed by the Zambian Immigration Department at present and that all tourist traveling into Zambia should have their visa obtained at the border or arranged in advance. More detailed information can be obtained from you nearest Zambian Embassy. Please let us know if any more information is required.

Yellow Fever Certificates:

Since July 2006, the Zambian health official at the Mwami border post (the border between Malawi and Zambia) is demanding that all travelers into Zambia carry a valid yellow fever certificate, although this part of Zambia officially does not require a yellow fever certificate/vaccination. The health official claims that regulations have changed and everyone traveling should be in the possession of a valid yellow fever certificate.

We would advise all our clients who are not in the possession of a valid yellow fever certificate yet to obtain one from their nearest health care centre. In Lilongwe the certificate can be easily obtained from several international health clinics during week day’s opening times. You need to have a yellow fever certificate, please note that you don’t need the yellow fever vaccine/injection, all you need to have is a certificate which will be the proof that you don’t have yellow fever, please explain this to your doctor so that he can issue you one. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding that unfortunately this development is beyond our control.

Money tips

Malawi has a fairly conservative system when it comes to foreign currency and limitations. As a foreigner you can bring any amount of money in and out. As a resident you can only take out what you purchased from the bank or bureaus. There is a wide array of banks and forex to choose form, with several international banks represented.

To exchange foreign currency through a forex bureau you are allowed up to $5000 per trip, for this amount be sure to go to one of your larger bureaus. You must have a copy of your passport for any foreign currency transaction.

Credit cards are not widely accepted and where they are, with large hotels, tour operators and selected restaurants, surcharges are common. Cash advances by credit and debit, visa and master cards are offered through Standbic and all other authorized dealers through their network of ATM’s. There may be a limitation on what you can draw in a day.

The most accepted currencies are US dollars, Sterling, Euro and Rands. Please bear in mind any bank or bureau will not accept US dollar notes which have the smaller president’s head, notes before 1990; some bureaus may change them at a lesser rate. Also, you will get a lesser rate for $5 and $1 denominations of dollar bills.

Traveling to Malawi

full valid passport is required for entry into Malawi. For tourist visits, visas are NOT required by citizens of most Commonwealth countries, the USA, Japan, most European Union countries and certain other countries. Please check the complete list AT THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE, and refer to your nearest Malawi diplomatic mission, from which visas for any nationality can be obtained.

All foreign passport holders with the exception of most citizens of commonwealth member countries have to obtain a visa for Zambia. Passport holders from the following countries do require vises on a reciprocal basis: Bangladesh; Gambia; Ghana; India; Nigeria; Sri Lanka; Sierra Leone; Pakistan; Papa New Guinea.

Passport holders from the following countries do require a visa and may obtain them at the port of entry or missions abroad: Angola; Britain; Burundi; Comoros; Congo Democratic Republic; Djibouti; Egypt; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Madagascar; Mozambique; New Zealand; Rwanda; Somalia; Sudan. Any private and / or business visitors wishing to visit neighboring countries shall be issued with re-entry visas valid for 7 days on request at internal immigration offices or at border posts before departure from Zambia.

Other nationalities can get a visa at the border for a sum of money. Except the following nationalities who will need to get a visa beforehand: Benin; Burkina Faso; Cameroon; Chad; Cote d’Ivoire; Gabon; Gambia; Ghana; Greece; Guinea Bissau; Guinea Conakry; Hong Kong; India; Iran; Lebanon; Liberia; Mali; Niger; Nigeria; Pakistan; New Guinea; Saudi Arabia; Senegal; Sierra Leone; South Korea; Sri Lanka; Turkey; United Arab Emirates.
