Wild life & Game viewing information
Welcome to Kiboko Camp, Mfuwe Zambia.
Our eco friendly tented safari camp in Zambia is location alongside the river bank of the Luangwa River. All tents now have excellent views over the river and its inhabitants, hippo’s, crocodiles and various beautiful birds.
There are hot showers, flushing toilets and a restaurant area on the premises. A well stocked bar and a swimming pool are available at the “Track and Trail” premises.
As the campsite is located just outside the National Park, and within the “Game Management Area” it is common that various wild animals roam the grounds on this side of the river, animals like elephants and hippo’s come ashore during evening and early morning hours.
There are some guidelines we want you to know:
– Always, at all times keep a minimum distance between you and the animal of 40 metres. (If you find yourself closer, retreat slowly and keep the animal within eyesight, so that you can see the animals movements.)
Elephants:
– If the elephant looks like it is not happy (lifting trunk and sniffing air, holding its ears out to make it look even bigger) you are to close, the elephant may charge. Retreat into safety of a building or vehicle, walk quickly, but do not run.
– Elephants have bad eyesight and therefore feel vulnerable when they unexpected encounter people. Elephants are always looking for food and especially fruits. Do not keep any food in the tents as Elephants will force them open.
Hippos:
– Hippo’s come on to the river bank at night to graze; Never walk in between the hippo and the water because the Hippo then feels threatened. Hippo’s are faster than they look and are able to speed around 40 Km/hour.
Monkeys:
– Do not leave food unattended, as baboons and other monkeys are very quick to grab your cookies etc., and will adapt unnatural habits by doing so.
Overall advice:
– Use a torch between 6 pm and 6 am when moving around camp; night watch men are available to escort you to and from your tent. Ask your guide for more information or advise if required, it will be a pleasure for him to share his knowledge with you.

Game viewing
The South Luangwa National Park has a long history of photographic safaris and the people involved have tried to maintain the highest standards of guiding and game viewing.
To do this we have to have guidelines that we ask all guides in the South Luangwa National Park to follow whenever possible. These guidelines are for the protection of the environment and to ensure all guests’ experiences of the South Luangwa National Park are as they should be.
To ensure the animals are not distressed by too many vehicles at one time we ask guides to avoid having more than three vehicles on a sighting at any one time. Therefore if your vehicle is the first on a sighting please do not expect the guide to stay for too long if there are other vehicles waiting. If you are the fourth vehicle there, the guide will wait for a short time away from the sighting until the first vehicle pulls off. We realise that sometimes this means that not everyone gets to see the best sightings but there is always next time!!!
To protect the flora and fauna of the area, we ask guides not to drive “off road”. There is a lot of life you are not necessarily aware of inhabiting the scrub just off the roads (birds’ nests, lichens rich in minerals, rare plants etc). Therefore if you ask your driver to “drive a bit further off the road so I can get a better photograph” he should tell you that he can’t and explain to you why. Therefore please do not ask!!!
We all have a responsibility to protect the area’s natural resources for the future and at the same time give you the best game viewing experience in Africa. Please help us to do both by being understanding when a guide may have to say “no”.
