Kiboko Environment & Community

Kiboko is operating within different environments and close with local communities. Performing operations within these environments comes with a great amount of responsibility towards these environments and communities. We are aware of this responsibility and the knowledge that tourism can negatively impact its surroundings. Therefore, Kiboko works hard to reduce their negative footprint and positively impact the environment and contribute wherever possible, mostly directly to the local communities. This responsible attitude within our tourism enterprises helps us to ensure that we operate in view of our set goals. It also shows other operators in the same industry and our clients that we are committed to social, economic, and environmental welfare. Kiboko is convinced that this approach will be one of the elements which should be included when conducting our businesses. We monitor our communal and environmental inputs on a regular base to be sure that we will deliver the best we can within the areas.

Wildlife Action Group Malawi is an NGO, which co-manages two governmental protected areas; Thuma Forest Reserve and Dedza-Salima Forest Reserve. The areas are located in the Central Region of Malawi, between Lilongwe and Lake Malawi on the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. The Albino Association of Malawi (TAAM). A foundation set up in Malawi to raise awareness of albinism in the country. It is one of the organisations under the umbrella of the Federation of Disability Organisations of Malawi (FEDOMA). People suffering from albinism in Malawi are victim to serious discrimination, eye sight problems, and because of the tropical climate; various skin problems, including skin cancer. Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust. Chipembele teaches Zambian children how to conserve and protect the local wildlife and natural environment in the Luangwa Valley. www.chipembele.org

Stichting Swistokaa. A small Dutch foundation run by 3 individuals and founded in 2006. They support the improvement of education and health care in Malawi. Taking responsibility into their own hands rather than that of a larger humanitarian organisation. The dedicated directors visit Malawi every year (by their own personal finance) to ensure their projects are running well and the money is helping those that really need it. Kiboko 2016

2016 has ended and what a succesful year it was. Our camp in Zambia has seen many happy customers again this year and our Kiboko Town Hotel has had its most succesful year to date! Furthermore, construction on our new camp in South Luangwa is progressing smoothly and should be operational in the coming year.

2015 is drawing to an end, and all of us here at Kiboko watch as another busy year comes to a close. Our branches in Zambia and throughout Malawi have seen a lot of clients this year, sending over 3500 bed nights to South Luangwa this year alone, not to mention all the others through Malawi and Victoria Falls.

Our campsite in South Luangwa has seen a lot of improvement this year, from new floor mats, new spacious mosquito nets in our tents, new staff uniforms, and lots of new equipment in our kitchen and game vehicles to much much more! We’re all looking forward to next year’s Green Season Special in South Luangwa and improving things further.

Kiboko Workshop

Our workshop expansion has been completed, and it has been a relentless battle against the African rainy season to keep our roofing sheets in place. Over 400 m2 of covered working space has been added towards the existing workshop.

Kiboko Staff

Over the course of the year two members of our wonderful staff have been blessed with beautiful new babies, one of which was a set of twins. We have enjoyed staff barbeques at the workshop and paid keen attention to the motivation of our staff this year.

New air conditioners have been fitted into every room in the hotel, to give our clients an even more luxury feeling during the hot summer months of the year. Further have all the mosquito nets been replaced to ensure optimal sleeping comfort. A new evening bar has also been set up in the bookings office upstairs for the convenience of our guests.

Kiboko Safaris is sponsoring a scout for the Wildlife Action Group anti poaching project. The Wildlife Action Group is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, working in nature conservation and management in Malawi.

Mission Statement

“Unfortunately there are still people who think that donor money and other funding should first go to ‘people projects’ and only leftovers should go to conservation projects. They argue that “people are more important than wildlife”. Though on first sight a reasonable statement, it is however a very naive and short sighted vision. Both fields need an equal amount of attention.

Conservation is not only about saving that one beautiful animal. Conservation also means protection of whole eco-systems on which not only wildlife but also people depend.

A young mother from a village close to Thuma F.R. Like most Malawians, her life and future is directly and indirectly linked to conservation.

Malawi faces serious environmental problems, like a shortage of fire wood (and many other forest products) on which most of the people in Malawi depend, floods during the rainy season, droughts during the dry season, erosion and a lowering water level of Lake Malawi, to name a few. All these environmental problems are the result of the rampant deforestation in the last decennia in Malawi and have drastically contributed, directly and indirectly, to poverty in Malawi.

Besides that, for a country like Malawi, among the poorest countries in the world, eco-tourism is one of the few chances of generating a significant and steady inflow of foreign cash which on the long term will positively affect the lives of all the people in this country; look at examples of ‘wildlife countries’ like Kenya and Tanzania where eco-tourism generates large amounts of revenue.

Eco-Tourism Needs Wildlife And Wildlife Needs Conservation

The average eco-tourist (with a lot of money in his pocket!) who comes to Africa simply wants to see an elephant, a leopard, a hippo, a buffalo and other wildlife and the choice of his or her holiday destination largely depends on the chance of actually seeing these animals.

Fortunately more and more people start to understand this link between wildlife and people and that is one of the reasons why NGO’s working in conservation, like the Wildlife Action Group, work together with the local communities to make their projects a success for everybody and everything.

So conservation is not only about wildlife: it is about protecting wildlife and about contributing towards a long term and sustainable solution against hunger and poverty among people!”

Protect areas and conserve nature

Protected areas are not, by themselves, enough to conserve nature. Zambia has 20 National Parks that cover with the GMA’s (Game Management Areas) over a quarter of the total size of Zambia. To protect large pieces of pristine nature is very important to maintain the ecological stability of each nature reserve. Nowadays people seem to realize the importance of nature both for welfare and well being. Unfortunately these two components are no longer to separate. Without nature’s economic value (safari tourism) nature on its own has no meaning for existence. Fortunately there are many organizations all over the world that make us conscious of certain alarming environmental developments in the world. Everyone can do his share to conserve nature, but no one can solve all the problems. We in South Luangwa, one of the most beautiful and pristine wildlife areas of Southern Africa, are lucky to have a few organizations that fight for maintaining the protected area. The protection of the Luangwa Valley is on a relatively small scale but in that way also better manageable. Zambia’s wildlife areas are not fenced off from the human settlements which is causing human & wildlife conflicts. In the Luangwa Valley are three different organizations active with the same basic objective: Its primary focus is upon maintaining the health of the natural surrounding: its fisheries, habitats, and biological diversity. … A balance must be found between human wellbeing and maximum protection for natural resources and animals.

Greener fuel

BERL has established a community farmer-based planting programme to plant Jatropha trees throughout 10 districts of Malawi. This will provide the feedstock for our processing plants. In the long term, BERL intends to provide Malawi with products whose demand will continue to increase. BERL is currently:

Rolling out an extensive tree planting programme to smallholder farmers using internationally recognised responsible practices. Through our extension agents farmers receive training and support and are registered as BERL farmers;
Purchasing seed from contracted BERL farmers;
Expelling and cleaning crude Jatropha Oil for use as bio fuel, to be blended with fossil-diesel for sale and use in Malawi;

Developing and offering various by-products to the market, including bio fertiliser and green charcoal;

Offering technical services to interested parties who would like to promote an additional, secure cash crop to rural communities at a grass root level;

Working towards a Certified Carbon Credit Programme with re-vegetation by planting Jatropha;

Contributing to the development of bio fuel policy in Malawi.

Benefits and Responsible growing

Through responsible growing, the following benefits are realised:

National Benefits: For every litre of Jatropha Oil produced, BERL saves the Malawian Government 80 US cents in foreign currency;

Local Development: Adding value to an agricultural product through processing. This new industry will also provide increased employment;
Renewable Energy: Reducing reliance on fossil fuel through the production of bio fuel;
Environmental Benefits: contributing to green house gas emission reductions through the sequestration of carbon in Jatropha. Employing and promoting good agricultural practices through our extension agents;
Social Benefits: BERL smallholder farmers receive an additional income by selling their Jatropha harvest (farm gate income of 67 US cents per kilogram). Harvesting occurs throughout the year providing the farmer with an income during the lean season;
Ensuring no Food vs Fuel conflict: BERL farmers only plant Jatropha as boundaries around their existing crop so as to ensure that essential food crops are not replaced. The additional cash crop does not demand a lot of labour during times when other crops do.

Kiboko community

HIV/Aids monitor program
Out of a population of 14 million, almost one million people in Malawi are living with HIV AIDS is the leading cause of death amongst adults in Malawi, and is a major reason why the country’s life expectancy is just 43 years.

Kiboko tries to help where it can by providing its staff members with basic AIDS education that enables them to protect themselves from becoming infected. From time to time we invite a special trainer to give a one-day course about HIV and Aids, where the staff has the chance to have themselves tested individually.

Volleyball
Being in the Malawi tourism business for many years it was hard not to get involved into the social life of Malawi. For several years now we are the proud sponsor of our own Kiboko volleyball team with very well trained Malawi volleyball players and Kiboko crew.

We can be found at the Shack in Lilongwe on every Wednesday evening. Have a drink, watch us play the game and/or have a chat with us! Burgers and drinks are sold for charity.
